What is a Mysterywick Puzzle Candle?

Inspired by an obsessive love for puzzles, mysteries, and candles, Mysterywick combines these elements creating a game experience like no other.

First, read the story on the side of the box and all included printed materials inside of the box. This will set the scene of the story and tell you what you're trying to solve for.

Light the candle, and wait until clues emerge in the wax. When you see something, extinguish the flame and carefully remove the clue from the wax with the provided tongs. Check the box and all materials included in the box to see how the clue relates to the story.

As you burn the candle, more clues will appear. By the end of the candle you should have everything you need to solve the mystery.

Question 2

How do I receive clues?

Clues will appear in the wax as you burn the candle. Depending on the difficulty (called "Perplexity Rating" on the box), the clues may be very straightforward or may be vague. On more perplexing puzzles, clues may only appear for a limited time.

Clues also can be anywhere in the packaging of a Mysterywick-- so it's important to hold onto everything until you've solved the puzzle! We encourage you to think outside the box.

How can I get a hint if I am stuck?

Hints to all puzzles can be found on our website, under Hints. A warning: these online hints do contain spoilers; however they are written in a way to help you along first before giving you the direct answer to the puzzle.

We will get back to you as soon as possible! In your email, be as specific as possible as to where you got stuck so that we can help you move forward without accidentally spoiling the puzzle for you. Let us know what you've solved so far, and what you've discovered in the wax.

How long is the game play? Can I play in one night?

Mysterywick Puzzle Candles are meant to be an extended immersive experience. The 8.5 oz candles burn anywhere from 40-60+ hours depending on usage and individual burn times. Sometimes clues appear rapidly, and sometimes there are a few hours between clues. Mysterywicks are meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, and the anticipation of the next clue is part of the game!

If you'd like to play in a group setting, we recommend burning your Mysterywick in the background of a weekly game night or group hangout.

Are your candles all natural? Are they non-toxic?

Yes and yes! We use only 100% soy wax in all of our candles. Wicks are 100% cotton paper, non-leaded wicks. Our fragrance oils are all non-toxic, carcinogen-, phthalate- and paraben-free, and conform to California Proposition 65 (Prop 65 is a regulation approved by California voters that require businesses to provide warnings on whether the product contains significant exposures to chemicals that may either cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive and health hazards. This initiative was approved to address growing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals.)

All natural soy wax sometimes has imperfections, divots, and textures when cooling and hardening. This is normal and not a defect in the candle.

How big are your candles?

What does perplexity level mean?

Perplexity level is Mysterywick's version of a challenge rating.  Similar to an escape room difficulty rating, the perplexity level helps you decide which Mysterywick would be best suited for your interests in play.  We have determined our levels through a variety of aspects including difficulty of puzzles, time dedicated to play, and knowledge of escape room-esque puzzles.   Perplexity is rated from 1 star (novice) to 4 stars (expert).

Is Mysterywick suitable for children?

Due to the intense themes of Mysterywick stories, we do not recommend them for children.

Do you recommend taking notes while playing?

Absolutely!   Mysterywicks are meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.  Therefore, we recommend taking detailed notes of everything you see, smell, items removed out of the candle, the order items are taken out of the candle, etc.  It is important to take notes while playing so you do not miss any integral parts of the puzzle.   Do you need a notebook?  We have a scented Mysterywick journal perfect for all of your note taking needs.

How long does shipping take?

All orders ship via USPS Priority, unless otherwise specified. We do not ship via UPS or Fedex. All orders will generally be sent out within 5 business days from purchase, usually sooner. Shipping times are usually between 1-3 days once dispatched. Check the homepage to see if there are extended processing times. Mysterywick is a two-person operation but we do our best to ship orders as quickly as possible!

It is important to remember that soy wax is susceptible to heat and therefore it is recommended to bring packages inside immediately upon delivery. Mysterywick is not responsible for candles that melt or leak due to the heat at the delivery location or during transit. Treat all Mysterywick packages as if they were perishable items and bring them indoors immediately upon delivery.

Do you offer returns?

Due to the nature of our products, we cannot accept returns on any purchases. All sales are final. If you feel you've received a defective puzzle, please reach out to us at mysterywick@gmail.com and describe the issue you're having. If the puzzle is defective, we will send a replacement free of charge.

If you do not like the game or the scent, we encourage you to gift your puzzle to a friend who may enjoy it. We cannot replace a candle due to personal scent preference or frustrated game play. Can I cancel an order?

Once an order is placed, it cannot be canceled or modified. If you need to change or correct a shipping address, please email mysterywick@gmail.com immediately with your order number and corrected shipping address. We cannot promise the address can be corrected but we will do our best to make the change! Mysterywick is not responsible for orders placed by accident or in error. Any packages returned undeliverable to us will be refunded the cost of the products, less shipping.

Do you ship outside the USA?

Question 17

How long should I burn each candle at a time?

Accepted Answer

For the first burn, we recommend burning for 3-5 hours, or until the melted wax reaches the edge of the glass. Always burn on a heat-safe surface and away from pets and children. Trim wicks to 1/4" for all subsequent burns.

Question 18

What are the tongs for?

Accepted Answer

Each Mysterywick contains a set of eco-friendly bamboo tongs. When a clue appears in the wax, extinguish the flame and use the tongs to carefully retrieve the item. Tongs are reusable and biodegradable!

When should I trim the candle wick?

Accepted Answer

Wicks should be trimmed to 1/4" prior to every burn using a wick trimmer. You can leave the wick longer for the initial burn. Do not let wick trimmings accumulate in the wax. We have wick trimmers and flame snuffers available to help keep your candle in perfect shape while you play!

Question 20

What is tunneling? How can I prevent it?

Tunneling happens when a candle does not burn to the edge of the glass and creates a "tunnel" of unmelted wax on the sides of wick. One contributing factor is not letting the candle burn long enough, or the wick becoming uncentered.

If you candle begins to tunnel, wrap the vessel in aluminum foil and burn for at least 4 hours.
